Department Support for Evaluating Teaching and Mentoring Portfolios
Department chairs and internal evaluators play a critical role in the evaluation of teaching and mentoring. The HTOC and the Teaching and Learning Commons are available to support you in this process. Please see the information and resources below for more details on how your department can ensure a smooth and successful transition to holistic evaluation.
Evaluation Criteria: The HTOC has developed general evaluation criteria for teaching and mentoring portfolios, which departments can further refine to best suit their specific teaching contexts and goals for evaluation.
Opting into Holistic Evaluation: The HTOC is currently working with departments who are opting into holistic evaluation before it is required in the 2027-28 academic year. These “early adopter” departments receive personalized support from the HTOC and the Teaching and Learning Commons to implement holistic evaluation in their specific departmental context. This proactive work helps prepare your department for a smooth transition, and gives you a voice in shaping the process before it is a campus-wide expectation. Contact holistic-teaching@ucsd.edu to participate as an early adopter department in the 2026-27 academic year. You can also request more information or schedule a department visit where HTOC members can share more information with your faculty. The earlier you contact us the more help we can provide!
Support Materials: In Spring 2025 the HTOC partnered with the Commons to offer a quarter-long support program for early adopter departments, including parallel sessions for candidates and teams of departmental reviewers. You can view our workshop materials below. We will offer similar workshops in winter and/or spring 2026 - email holistic-teaching@ucsd.edu to learn more.

What Faculty are Saying
“[The Early Adopter Workshop Series] was likely the most effective training on a new effort on campus that I may have had in two decades: clear on expectations, hands-on for participants, and leveraging all the formats from lecture to seminar-style to group work.” (Faculty, Economics)
"I highly recommend the [Early Adopter Workshops]. The sessions were not only incredibly informative, but I also appreciated the workshopping I was able to do with my colleagues across campus in different departments in our breakout groups. I received tremendously helpful feedback on my drafts and came away from the workshops with a much clearer understanding of how to effectively write my Teaching & Mentoring Portfolio.” (Faculty, Analytical Writing Program)
